Head of Pastoral, Behaviour and Wellbeing (Senior Leadership)

The New School is seeking an experience colleague to join our senior leadership team. The candidate will have strong experience in school leadership, and particularly in the leadership of Pastoral and Safeguarding. This role will lead our pioneering and unique pastoral department. They will continue our innovative work, ensuring we are able to help every young person to develop socially and emotionally, and feel a sense of belonging while at school.

The Head of PBW is key to maintaining and developing our unique practice. The New School has a relational approach to care and is non-punitive, resolving conflict through restorative justice. You will be required to model best practice in your interactions with young people and adults, always listening and being respectful, boundaried, and empathetic.

Safeguarding statement

The welfare and safety of our students will always be our priority. We do everything possible to secure our young people’s safety.

The New School has specialist staff who lead on safeguarding our young people, including liaising with social services. All our colleagues are responsible for safeguarding children and young people.

Guiding principles

  • Ensure we practice safer recruitment in checking the suitability of staff and volunteers to work with children.

  • Raise awareness of child protection issues and equip children with the skills needed to keep them safe.

  • Have procedures in place for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases, of abuse, working alongside outside agencies to protect our students.

  • Support students who have been abused in accordance with his/her agreed child protection plan.

  • Establish a safe environment in which children can learn and develop.

  • Be vigilant for signs of abuse.
